Yspaniola is an education non-profit based in Batey Libertad, Dominican Republic. Our short-term goal is to create vertical access to quality education in Batey Libertad, from pre-k classes to university scholarships. In order to reach this goal, Yspaniola focuses on developing literacy skills and healthy child development in our Learning Center and Food Programs, support university education for competitive students from Batey Libertad through our University Scholarship Program, and form a larger network of support and solidarity through our Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs.

Our long-term goal is to replicate these programs in other bateys and marginalized communities across the Dominican Republic. We aim to create a network of communities with access to quality education and social and economic capital so that individuals can advocate and act on their own behalf to petition their government for civil, social, and economic change.

Primary Programs and Projects

Batey Libertad Learning Center-Provides classes in Spanish language literacy to over 115 students ages 4 to 15.

University Scholarship Program- Provides full university scholarships, extracurricular tutoring, and professional development training to deserving students from Batey Libertad.

Service-Learning Trips- Yspaniola hosts up to 7 service-learning per year, in which which students and professionals from the US and Mexico learn about issues of human rights and education in the DR, live in homestays in Batey Libertad, and support our work through service projects.
